News CARAS and Less Emissions Inc. partner to help offset CO2 emissions for the 2016 JUNO Awards CALGARY, March 30, 2016: Today, Less Emissions Inc., Canada’s highest quality offset provider, and The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) are announcing a partnership to reduce the carbon emissions footprint of the 45th annual JUNO Awards to be held in Calgary, Alberta, March 28 to April 3, 2016. This year marks the third straight year that CARAS has chosen to offset the carbon emissions resulting from the heating and cooling of JUNO Week event venues as well as travel by CARAS members, production crews, and event attendees. Less Emissions is ranked as Canada’s highest quality carbon offset provider by The David Suzuki Foundation and The Pembina Institute. “Less Emissions recommends a three-step approach to reducing emissions by first conserving, choosing green energy where possible and then purchasing high quality offsets for those emissions that could not be avoided,” said Ron Seftel, CEO, Less. “We’re proud to have been chosen by CARAS for a third year to provide carbon offsets for the JUNO Awards, an action that shows true leadership by demonstrating that we can all do our part to reduce our environmental impact.” The offsets for the 2016 JUNO Awards are sourced from a Canadian landfill gas capture and destruction project, a facility designed specifically to reduce greenhouse gases created by landfill waste. The CARAS sustainability strategy involves collaborating with partners and suppliers to reduce resource consumption, manage waste, mitigate climate change impacts, opt for environmentally and socially responsible goods and services, inspire people to get involved, and create positive legacies for the host community. Examples of actions being taken in relation to the 2016 JUNO Awards include minimizing the need for built set components for the JUNO Awards CTV broadcast through focusing on use of video and projection, reducing banner production by fifty per cent through use of digital signage, providing production crews and volunteers with reusable water bottles as well as water coolers for refills, diverting waste from landfill through reuse, recycling and compost initiatives, and sourcing grass range fed, antibiotic and hormone free bison and elk for the Gala Dinner from a locally owned and operated farm.
